The file leaves and the picture changes

You finish a grade you can defend. The trace sits where you put it, the parade is clean, and you render the file and send it over. The reply says it looks washed out. You open your own timeline again and nothing has moved.

Nothing did move. The render took your picture data out of the suite intact. What goes out beside that data is a short set of labels. A label is metadata, meaning information written into the file that describes it without changing a pixel. One label says which color space the picture is in, meaning which set of colors the stored numbers describe. Another says which gamma a player should assume, meaning the curve it uses to draw those numbers onto a screen.

Resolve writes both of those at render time. The Deliver page has a Color Space Tag menu and a Gamma Tag menu, and each one embeds its choice into the rendered file as metadata. A preference can also tag QuickTime files as Rec.709-A. Rec.709 is the standard video color space for HD delivery, and Rec.709-A is a second way of labeling the same material for Apple's playback path. That is a second labeling of the same material, aimed at web viewing rather than broadcast.

So one export can go out labeled Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 and another can go out labeled Rec.709-A. Same picture data, two different instructions to whatever opens it. A color space tag is a label on the file, not a change to the picture. Which label a job ships is a delivery decision, and it is not made here.

Apple's playback path is where this surfaces most often. A file that reads correctly in the grading application comes back lighter in QuickTime and in Safari. A plain media player draws the same file the way you graded it. Nobody regraded anything in between. The grade did not change. The interpretation did.

There is a third cause, and it has nothing to do with labels. A hosting platform re-encodes what you upload, so the viewer is watching the platform's file rather than yours. A difference that shows up only after the upload finished processing belongs to that step. What the re-encode does to the picture is taken apart in Color Management and Pipeline.

Choosing the tag, correcting a wrong one, and proving the fix is that path's work too. The room is called The Project Settings That Matter. Core owns the part that comes first: finding the link that re-interpreted the file.
