What a look may do to skin, sky and foliage

A strong look can move every color in the frame. How far it can go before the shift feels accidental depends on what the scene gives the audience as an explanation.

Order the three by how much freedom that explanation gives and you get the same ranking on most frames: sky moves furthest, foliage less, and skin least of the three.

Sky may move dramatically when weather, hour, or genre supports it.
Foliage changes with season, species and light. Its palette should remain coherent with the world around it.
Skin often receives the closest attention in people-centered scenes, while still reflecting its illumination and intended finish.

On a wet street at dusk, a colder direction may push the sky deep blue and cool the trees while the faces retain the warmth of a streetlight. The different amounts come from the lighting story and dramatic priority, not a universal allowance.

On a real Resolve job, choose the performer whose approved close-up best represents the scene and grab that frame into the Gallery. Match other faces to the quality of that skin rather than to identical scope values. Different light can change the numbers while the faces still belong together. Check hands, ears, knees, and any other visible skin as well as the face.

Now do it yourself. The barber's plate came back cool and desaturated from a rushed transfer. The scene should run warm: bare bulbs around the mirror, a late shop, laughter. Warm it and bring the chroma back up until his skin sits at the warm edge of what skin will take, then stop there.

Skin does not read right at one exact value. It reads right across a small band of them. A push that goes past that band into sunburnt is as wrong as a push that never reached it. So read his skin vector on the vectorscope the way the Skin room taught you to read a reach. Stop one step before his skin reads sunburnt.

The vectorscope gives you two useful observations about a face. Angle describes hue direction and reach describes saturation. Neither comes with one universal acceptable number. Compare both with the person, lighting, approved reference, and neighboring shots before deciding the look still holds.

Correct the image first, then put your style where there is room for it, which on most frames means the sky and not the faces. Next you read a frame somebody else graded.
